WANGIES EN MINA
| Voorstelling foto |
Wangies was Pikenien and Sarah's oldest son. He was handsome. He was Pedi and handsome at the same time. Pikanien and Sarah lived on our Witpoort farm.
Some eight or more Pedi families lived on our bushveld farm. Mina came to Witpoort from the bushveld farm, where she lived. She came to help my mother with housework and looking after four young children.
There were lots of families and lots of people working and living on both farms at the time, when I grew up. At any given good morning there would have been around twenty or more people working and helping and so it was that Mina who came to help at Witpoort, but lived on the bushveld, farm fell in love with Wangies.
Mina was the loveliest person. She was beautiful and sweet all at the same time. She laughed often and quickly. There used to be a building behind the house but it was later torn down. The creamery was in this building. All the milk was processed in this building. The young men working on the farm brought the milk in for processing after the morning milking session and then the young girls helping in the kitchen would take over with the straining, creaming and bottling of the milk. All the equipment was then washed and stored for the evening milking and this job was done by the kitchen girls and Mina was one of them.
This was where Mina and Wangies had their first encounters. Where they first jumped through the window to be together for a while. We saw them secretly holding hands or stealing a kiss and we saw the twinkle in Mina's eyes every time anybody mentioned Wangies. She would laugh shyly and look away or run away. Wangies was handsome ... very, very handsome and my father spoke very highly of him. He was Pikanien and Sarah's eldest son and he was a good man. He was the right man for Mina and we knew that he was the right one for Mina!
We loved Mina!
